Core Game Rules
In baccarat, cards are valued as follows: Aces count as one point, cards two through nine maintain their face value, and tens and face cards count as zero. The game begins with two cards dealt to both the Player and Banker positions. If either hand totals eight or nine, the round concludes immediately with a "natural" win. If neither hand achieves a natural, predetermined drawing rules determine whether additional cards are dealt. The winning hand is simply the one whose total is closest to nine, with ties paying eight-to-one or nine-to-one odds depending on the variation.
The mathematical structure of baccarat creates distinct probability distributions. The Banker hand wins approximately 50.68% of the time when excluding ties, which is why most casinos charge a 5% commission on Banker wins. This commission effectively balances the house advantage across both primary betting options, creating one of the lowest house edges in casino gaming.
